Thankful Cancer Survivor Learns a Valuable Lesson

Today is Thanksgiving and I am reflecting on all the things I am thankful for as a cancer survivor.  It was over 5 years ago that I received the news of my cancer diagnosis – news that sent shock waves throughout my entire being.  They say that as cancer survivors, we gain a new appreciation of life and that the things that matter before cancer simply don’t.  I have to say that this is true.  Before cancer, my life was a hectic spiral of the demanding pressures of work and a stressful life.  As I look back those 5 years, I feel that each day I learned a new lesson.  Each person I met taught me something about myself.  The nurse who smiled and taught me the meaning of patience.  The doctor who touched my shoulder to let me know she will do everything she can to help me win my battle taught me that strength was within me.  The pastor who guided me each day taught me the meaning of faith.  The therapist who talked to me like an old friend taught me the meaning of letting go of the unimportant.   And, the awesome sister who stood by me through every moment of cancer treatments, scans and cancer scares  taught me that love and support can get me through the darkest moments.  Each of those moments, I would not trade them for the best days of my life because I learned the meaning of strength, determination, faith, love,  support and letting go the trivial stuff.  Most of all, I learned to stop and open my eyes.  Life is a blessing.  Every day is a miracle.  I am going to enjoy each day with new-found eyes and never take one thing for granted.  Although I owe cancer for teaching me this hard lesson,  I can say as a thriving cancer survivor who fought like a girl, cancer is history and I won in more ways than one.
